Combining the strengths of user experience design and model based testing

In the early phases of software development a lot of the activities of user experience designers are aimed at creating an abstract model of the final system. In cooperation with software architects this model is translated into detailed designs in later phases of the product development. We believe that the modeling efforts from the early stages can be used as input for model based testing.

Another advantage of cooperation between user experience designers and software testers is that it enables early discussion on what are the most critical scenarios. The scenarios identified in these discussions can later be used in usability tests that complement the testing efforts aimed at coverage and completeness. This combined effort improves the overall system quality. In this presentation we will present basic concepts of task models, spec explorer and our first results from an industry based case.
